The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), led by the IOC and co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Science Council (ISC) is the global locus for ocean observing coordination.
The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) provides a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support the actions needed to sustainably manage the ocean and contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Ocean Decade Coordination Office (DCO) for Ocean Observing is a collaboration between the Decade Coordination Unit (DCU) and GOOS, to support the aims of both the Ocean Decade and GOOS and to maximise alignment.
GOOS has 3 flagship programmes within the Ocean Decade: Ocean Observing Co-Design, CoastPredict and Observing Together. GOOS also supports a Decade Coordination Office for Ocean Observing (DCO-OO), which coordinates across the 11 Ocean Decade Programmes that focus on ocean observing, including the 3 GOOS programmes.
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is now looking for a consultant to fill the role of ‘GOOS Ocean Decade Support Officer’. The role will focus on:
- supporting DCO-OO Lead in coordinating and supporting Ocean Decade programmes and actions under the DCO, in line with the DCO’s Terms of Reference and work plan;
- working with GOOS to provide support to the GOOS Ocean Decade Programme Observing Together.
The position is a full-time, 11-month consultancy and will be carried out remotely.
