Decade of ocean science

Ocean observing is a key element of The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)

The Decade is a “once in a lifetime opportunity to create a new foundation across the science-policy interface, to strengthen the management of our oceans and coasts for the benefit of humanity.”

It will provide a common framework to make sure that ocean science can fully support countries’ actions to manage our oceans sustainably and achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Ocean measurements contribute to the convenience, prosperity, and safety of every person on the planet. The Ocean Decade is a truly unique opportunity to promote public awareness and the physical extension of GOOS values and assets.”

Craig McLean, Assistant Administrator of NOAA for Research, US Representative to the IOC

Ocean observing is essential to predict the consequences of change, design mitigation and guide adaptation. We are committed to making sure ocean observing helps create the ocean we need for the future we want.
