Ship Observations Team (SOT)

The work of the Ship Observations Team (SOT) encompasses voluntary ship-based data collection programmes operated through the Automated Shipboard Aerological Programme (ASAP), Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS) and Ship of Opportunity Programme (SOOP).

These individual programmes support research, numerical weather prediction and reanalysis, ocean state estimation, marine forecasts and warnings for the safety of life at sea, amongst many other applications. The observations are collected for immediate use, for example in time-sensitive forecasts, and are then archived to update climate records.

SOT is governed by the SOT Executive Board.
