An international workshop on wave prediction and a symposium on hazard assessment in coastal areas, sponsored by Environment Canada, the federal Program of Energy Research and Development (PERD) and the WMO-IOC Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) will be held in Banff, Alberta, Canada – October 27 - November 1, 2013. • to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information related to wind, wave, and storm surge hindcasting and forecasting, including modelling, measurement and past and future states of the climate;
• to coordinate ongoing R&D initiatives;
• to discuss priorities for future research and development.

The theme session for the Wave Workshop is “Forecasting Dangerous Sea States”. Topics may include theoretical, numerical, laboratory or operational applications dealing with forecasting of hazardous wave conditions such as crossing seas, unusually steep waves, rapidly developing seas and rogue waves. The theme session for the coastal hazards workshop will be on “Storm Surge Forecasting”. Topics may include theoretical, numerical, or operational applications dealing with storm surge modelling and forecasting, especially inundation modelling, and including the use of satellite products. Papers dealing with research related to these themes will be given particular consideration. Papers are also welcomed on other research and operational aspects of wave and storm surge hindcasting and forecasting; including operational forecasting; regional hindcasts; storm surge climatology; data collection and instrumentation; data assimilation into numerical models; wave-current interaction; wave-ice interaction; shallow water and nearshore effects; wind fields for wave hindcasting or forecasting: extremal analysis; case studies, past and future climate trend and variability. In addition to regular sessions organized around submitted papers, sessions will be organized by a number of invited experts in a number of key areas related to wave and storm surge prediction, providing an excellent opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas. The program will consist of both presentation and poster sessions; author should indicate their preference, but the final decision rests with the workshop organizers. Those wishing to present a paper should submit a title and abstract (100-300 words) in a Microsoft Word document to Val Swail (Val.Swail@ec.gc.ca), with a copy to Don Resio (don.resio@unf.edu) and Holli Klein (h.klein@unf.edu). Each abstract should contain the author’s name, mailing address and telephone number. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is April 22, 2013. Full papers will be required by September 30, 2013.
