5th session of the JCOMM Expert Team on Sea Ice

25 – 28 Mar 2014, Ottawa, Canada

The fifth session of the Expert Team on Sea Ice (ETSI) of the Joint WMO-IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) was held at the Conference Room of the Hotel Courtyard Ottawa Downtown, Ottawa, Canada, at the kind invitation of the Canadian Ice Service, from 25 to 28 March 2014. This session was convened jointly with the 13th session of the Steering Group for the Global Digital Sea Ice Data Bank (GDSIDB) project, whose discussion focused on the relevant issues of sea ice climatology.

The Team members discussed and agreed on the detailed work plan for the intersessional period (until 2017) based on the JCOMM SFSPA intersessional workplan, taking into account the emerging priorities of WMO and IOC, with a view to setting clear timelines and deliverables. The following issues were discussed at the session:

  • Support and enhance the polar component of GMDSS
  • Support for sea ice climatology and ice information
  • Maintain and update sea ice technical documentation
  • Support and enhance ENC/Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) for ice navigation
  • Enhancing the integrated ice services and forecasting
  • Training and capacity development for sea ice
