Fourteenth Session of the IOC (of UNESCO) Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions IOCARIBE

The Fourteenth Session of the IOC of UNESCO Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions SC-IOCARIBE-XIV was held in Cartagena, Colombia, 26-28 April 2017. The Session was attended by 35 participants from fifteenth countries of the Caribbean Region and two Regional Organizations. The Session reviewed main progress achieved during the intersessional period 2015 – 2017.The Subcommission adopted nine (9) Recommendations concerning: (i) Capacity Development Strategy; (ii) Working Group on Harmful Algae in the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions ; (iii) Ocean Acidification; (iv) Sargassum Blooms; (v) Odincarsa; (vi) Caribbean Marine Atlas CMA; and, (vii) IOCARIBE-GOOS; (viii) Caribbean Large Marine Ecosystems (CLME+); and, (ix) Budget. A new Board of Officers for the IOCARIBE Sub-Commission was elected for the period 2017-2019. Mr. Francisco Brizuela Venegas (Mexico) was re-elected by acclamation as Chairperson, Mr. Arnulfo Sanchez Morales (Panama) was re-elected as Vice-Chairperson, Ms. Bonnie Ponwith (United States) was re-elected as Vice-Chairperson and Mr. Marck Oduber (Aruba) was elected as Vice-chairperson. La Decimocuarta Reunión Intergubernamental de la Subcomisión de la COI para el Caribe y Regiones Adyacentes IOCARIBE (SC-IOCARIBE-XIV), se realizó en Cartagena, Colombia, del 26 al 28 de Abril del 2017. La Reunión contó con la participación de 35 participantes de quince países de la región del Caribe y dos organizaciones regionales. Durante la reunión se revisaron los progresos realizados durante el periodo entre sesiones 2015 – 2017. La Subcomisión aprobó nueve (9) Recomendaciones para los siguientes temas: (i) Estrategia de la COI para el Desarrollo de Capacidades; (ii) Grupo de Trabajo sobre Floraciones de Algas Nocivas para el Caribe y Regiones Adyacentes (HAB-ANCA); (iii) Acidificacion del Oceano; (iv) Floraciones de Sargazos (v) Odincarsa; (vi) Atlas Marino del Caribe CMA; (vii) IOCARIBE-GOOS; (viii) Grandes Ecosistemas Marinos para el Caribe (CLME+); y, (ix) Presupuesto. La Subcomisión eligió nuevos Miembros de su Mesa Directiva para el próximo periodo entre reuniones del 2015-2017. El Sr. Francisco Brizuela Venegas (México) fue reelegido Presidente por aclamación, la Sra. Bonnie Ponwith (Estados Unidos) fue reelegida como Vice-Presidente, el Sr. Arnulfo Sánchez Morales fue reelegido como Vice-Presidente y el Sr. Marck Oduber (Aruba) fue elegido como Vicepresidente.
