The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), led by the IOC and co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Science Council (ISC), is the global framework for ocean observing coordination. GOOS aims to deliver the essential ocean information needed for our sustainable development, safety, wellbeing and prosperity. The GOOS Management Team, headquartered at IOC Paris, lead and support a community of international, regional and national ocean observing programmes, governments, UN agencies, research organizations and scientists.
The GOOS Biology and Ecosystems (BioEco) Panel is one of GOOS 3 Expert Panels. The Panel is made up of experts from around the world who provide guidance to the GOOS community with regard to the requirements for ocean observations to meet global needs, across policy instruments, such as the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), and to support the provision of essential information to decision makers. Activities include facilitating the global and regional integration of existing biological observing networks around the BioEco Essential Ocean Variables to increase efficiency, interoperability, data availability and value, and improving the communication of the need for consistent and sustained biological and ecological observations to meet growing societal needs. It also encourages best practices and the development of technology to improve sampling strategies.
The BioEcoOcean Project is funded by the European Union and is developing a Blueprint for Integrated Ocean Science to enable foundational change in how we approach biological and ecosystem ocean observation to enhance scientific understanding, improve management, and ensure sustainable use and development of the ocean. This includes evolving the GOOS EOV Specification Sheets to be more user focused, developing co-design/co-creation of best practices, and ensuring strong connections with the GOOS BioEco Panel across its work.
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is now looking for an individual consultant to work as a Science Officer to contribute to the GOOS BioEco Panel and the components of the BioEcoOcean Project. The position is a full-time, 11-month consultancy and can be carried out remotely.
