The GOOS-IODE Ocean Best Practices System Project (OBPS) was established in June 2019 as a joint project between the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. In June 2025, the OBPS reached a major milestone in its evolution, when at the 33rd Session of the IOC General Assembly, the IOC formally adopted the OBPS (Decision IOC-3.4.4) as a cross-IOC initiative, with Terms of Reference and a Steering Group as identified in the decision. This strategic move reflects OBPS’s growing importance and impact across the ocean science community.
The IOC seeks an ocean professional to undertake a consultancy contract to support the Ocean Best Practices System Project in forming its new Steering Group and achieving its objectives (Decision IOC-33 3.4.4). The position is for an Ocean Best Practice System Support Officer’ and this role will focus on contributing to the development of the Ocean Best Practices System through supporting the implementation of its work plan, and working with the OBPS Steering Group, under the guidance of the IOC.
